The Soul Urge number, sometimes called the Heart's Desire, reads from the vowels of your full birth name. Where the Expression describes the talents you can show a room, the Soul Urge points at something more private: what you actually want. The pull underneath the plans. The thing you'd chase if no one were watching and nothing had to be justified.

Splitting a name into vowels and consonants is an old habit with a newer meaning attached. Turning letters into numbers goes back to gematria, attested in an Assyrian inscription from the 8th century BCE, and in 1533 Cornelius Agrippa laid number-values across the Latin alphabet.
The idea that the vowels hold your hidden wants is much younger. It comes from early-1900s American numerology, which read the vowels — the sounds a word is built around — as the inner life, and the consonants as the face it shows. There's no ancient warrant for that split; it's a modern reading, and each number's page marks where the old arithmetic ends and the newer idea begins.
